Many condensing boiler models feature traditional cast iron heat exchangers, which can be easily corroded. Q: What does a condensing boiler do to increase heating efficiency?

A: Condensing boilers utilize the latent heat of water produced from burning fuel, in addition to the standard, sensible heat to increase its efficiency. In a conventional boiler, fuel is burned and the hot gases produced are passed through a heat exchanger where much of their heat is transferred to water, thus raising the water’s temperature.

One of the hot gases produced in the combustion process is water vapor or steam. A condensing boiler extracts added heat from the waste gases by condensing steam to liquid water, recovering its latent heat. A typical increase in efficiency can be between 10% to 12%. Up to 98% thermal efficiency can be achieved, compared to 70% to 80% with conventional designs.
